Is your municipality organized?

Municipalities in the Movement

Ontario municipalities are at the front lines of the transition to a conserver society -- and an active network of community groups and leaders is a key tool.  Our goal, as a start, is for every major municipality in Ontario to have developed a community conservation network and a community action plan.

Use our Community Action map to see if your municipality or community is organized to support community action

There's more than one way to organize, and in fact there are several great organizations that can help you get your municipality or community organized for action

Here's who we are tracking:

Community Conservation Networks
In the early 1990's, the Conservation Council of Ontario developed a low-cost five step approach to community action it's a highly adaptable model that builds on existing resources and strengths in the community.  They include the intensive Live Green Toronto community animation project to the long running and low-cost community workshops under the Cambridge City Green Strategy.

Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition
The Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition was founded in the late 1980's to connect environment, society and economy as part of a complete approach to a healthy community.  OHCC advises communities across the Province.

Green Communities Canada
Green Communities Canada has been active since the early 1990's.  GCC develops programs that are delivered through member organizations that are a local centre of excellence in communities across Canada.

Transition Town Initiatives
A recent addition to
the community action scene, Transition Towns are community-led processes that seek to help a community make a voluntary and proactive change to a post-carbon society.  Good fun, and a great organizers handbook.

The Natural Step
The Natural Step helps municipalities and communities with strategic planning for a sustainable future.

Other Municipal or Community Initiatives
This category covers municipalities have developed an independent community or strategic environmental plan.  They range from the grass roots carbon neutral project in Eden Mills to the Earthwise Thunder Bay community environmental strategy.
