Welcome to Ontario's big green, sustainable, resilient, conservation movement.

Nobody owns our movement.  Heck, we can't even agree on the name.  Is it the green movement, environmental movement, sustainable development movement, Everyone has a part to play.

Ecologist Paul Hawken said it best: "This is the biggest social movement in all of history, and it doesn't have a name".  There is a tremendous convergence happening

"We Conserve" is a catalyst for a movement that is already happening and will continue to grow.  It is not something we have created, rather it is something we have helped identify and support.

The trick to building a stronger movement is to identify who has already assumed the responsibility for key roles in a movement, and then concentrate on filling in the gaps.

Our approach is to start by identifying the lead organizations and existing networks that can address the top ten conservation priorities  -- both through policy and though support for voluntary action.

Coming soon: an overview of Ontario' networks and leaders.  Stay tuned.

Networks around priority issues

  • provide coordination and information sharing

  • help determine priorities

  • help develop campaigns

  • monitor and report on progress

    A Gap at the Top

Very few jurisdictions have an existing organization that can serve as a secretariat for an integrated voluntary transition strategy.

There are multi-stakeholder groups on policy, and councils and networks around specific themes, but try to find a coordinating body focused on voluntary transition that is inclusive and covers all issues.

A united conservation  movement takes environmental-ism to a whole new level, and it will require new forms of leadership and coordination.

The first organizational challenge, then, is to identify or establish an organization that will be widely recognized as the coordinating secretariat to help unite activities across the jurisdiction.
